Lap-Band Surgery Patient: Lost 200 Pounds

The weight gain was slow for Rebecca. But, by the time she was thirty-something, she weighed three-hundred-something. Then it happened; she made the choice to lose it. After losing nearly 200 pounds the only thing big about Rebecca is her love of life.

Rebecca once felt she was on the sidelines of life. Lacking the energy of a typical twenty-nine year old, she was exhausted by the end of her work day. But, even if Rebecca had the energy for a social life, she was too self conscious to consider it. When she weighed over 300 pounds, she had many reasons to stay home.

The more Rebecca stayed home, the more she ate, and the more her troubles grew. As her weight increased so did health problems. Her obesity was causing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint pain and severe back problems. Her health concerns were magnified by a family history dying young. She knew it was time to do something: but what?

Rebecca tried dieting to lose weight but the challenge was too great. She knew about Bariatric surgery from her time working in a hospital. She also knew about complications some suffered as a result of extremely invasive procedures. Such a solution was not for her. Rebecca then became aware of the Lap-Band System.

The Lap-Band System is a minimally invasive and adjustable surgical treatment for morbid obesity. It induces weight loss by reducing the capacity of the stomach, by the use of a small inflatable implant device that restricts the amount of food that can be consumed. This procedure is fully adjustable, reversible and has few risks and side effects.

Rebecca’s job allowed her to observe Lap-Band patients during their recovery. With a skeptics’ eye she watched and learned. She discovered that the Lap-Band System was more than surgery alone; it was a change of life-style. Rebecca became encouraged by others’ positive results. She began to believe; this was her best hope.

Rebecca was 30-years-old, and weighed 355 pounds, when she made her decision about Lap-Band. After surgery, the weight came off slowly at first; three years later, she is nearly 200 pounds lighter. Having lost over half her pre-surgery body weight, Rebecca’s life has changed.

She no longer suffers with aching joints and crippling back pain. Her greatly improved health revitalized her life. Propelled by a new level of energy she is more productive at work and enjoys having a life beyond work. She now has energy to workout at the gym and walks her dog without becoming exhausted. After exercising she may relax in a hot bath, now that she can fit comfortably into the tub.

Perhaps equally important were the emotional changes for Rebecca. Her self respect and self confidence replaced low self esteem and embarrassment. A positive outlook on life replaced the negative thoughts. She now makes plans for the future, believing she has a better chance of being here to enjoy it.

Rebecca has at least one remaining wish, “I do wish I would have done the Lap-Band sooner.” She also hopes that others in similar situations see her story and realize they too can, “Get back into the world, instead of being on the sidelines watching.”
