Minimally Invasive Surgery
For many surgical procedures, traditional “open” surgery
has been replaced with less invasive methods. Laparoscopic surgery has already
revolutionized the way procedures are performed at Saint Alphonsus. Instead
of incisions through tissue and bone, three strategic entry “ports,” or
round holes the diameter of a dime, allow for a tiny camera, known as an endoscope,
and assorted operating tools. The surgeon's view is magnified onto a high-resolution
color monitor for observation by the surgery team.
The laparoscopic surgery approach reduces trauma to the patient, speeds recovery,
reduces blood loss, minimizes the risk of infection and reduces pain and scarring.
Saint Alphonsus has an instituted a program to encourage new techniques, assist
physicians with continuing education and inform patients on the latest advances
available to them.
Hundreds of advanced laparoscopic procedures have been performed over the past
five years through the Minimally Invasive Surgery Program at Saint Alphonsus.
Advanced procedures available are minimally invasive techniques for gastroesophageal
reflux disease, motility disorders of the esophagus, benign and malignant diseases
of the stomach and intestines, disorders of the spleen and adrenal glands, abdominal
pain and staging or biopsy techniques.
In addition, routine laparoscopic procedures including gallbladder removal, appendectomy and hernia repair are performed regularly. Minimally invasive techniques usually result in shorter hospital stays, less pain and better cosmetic results.
