What Is a High Risk Pregnancy?
A pregnancy may be considered high risk for a number of reasons, including a preexisting medical condition, age 35 and older or 18 and younger, a genetic disorder in the patient or family, and obstetric complications. Some examples are listed below but this is by no means a complete list.

Complications During Pregnancy
We provide consultation and offer recommendations for managing various obstetric and medical problems, as a partner with your primary obstetrician.

Examples of various conditions include:

  • Obstetric Complications
    • Premature Labor
    • Preclampsia
    • Fetal Growth Problems
    • Multiple Gestation (Twins, Triplets)
    • Placenta Previa
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Previous pregnancy loss
  • Medical Complications
    • Diabetes
    • Hypertension
    • Thrombophilias
    • Thyroid Disease
    • Autoimmune Conditions such as Lupus
  • Genetic Disorders
    • Down Syndrome
    • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Muscular Dystrophy

Prenatal Diagnosis
Most babies are born healthy. All women, however, have a very small chance of having a baby with a problem. Knowing before birth helps parents prepare and make important decisions about newborn care. Some women may have had a child with a problem or have a genetic disorder in the family.

  • Preconception Counseling: An evaluation before pregnancy to assess the risks, often for women with medical conditions, previous obstetric complications and/or genetic problems.
  • Genetic Counseling: Assessment of genetic risks, including women age 35 and older, a family history or previously affected child.
  • First Trimester Screening: The earliest screening available to detect Down's Syndrome, for all women.
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): The earliest fetal genetic testing.
  • Targeted (Level II) Ultrasound: Including 3D and 4D imaging
  • Amniocentesis: Genetic testing of amniotic fluid performed at 15-20 weeks of pregnancy.
  • Cordocentesis: Fetal blood sampling for infection or anemia with isoimmunization.

Complete Care
Should your baby have a problem that is diagnosed prenatally, we will work together with our Neonatal Team and the appropriate pediatric sub-specialists to provide your baby the best care possible. Prenatal consultation is available with many of the pediatric sub-specialists to assist in planning your baby's care after delivery.
