Inpatient Oncology

Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center has an inpatient unit specifically dedicated to the care of cancer patients being cared for in the Cancer Care Center.

The inpatient unit is open seven days per week, 24 hours per day. The unit has three private beds and four semi-private beds. Patients admitted to the unit may be immunosuppressed and require diligent infection control processes. Patients admitted to the inpatient oncology unit will have a diagnosis that can best be managed by the specialized oncology multi-disciplinary team. Typical patients admitted to the inpatient unit include:

  • Tandem and ovoid or vaginal cylinder brachytherapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Neutropenia
  • Complex oncology complications related to treatment or disease process
  • Cancer Care Center physician request

The medical oncology continuum of care is supported by registered nurses and an interdisciplinary team which includes a pharmacist, dietitian, chaplain, social worker (MSW), care guide and financial counselor. Our registered nurses pursue ongoing specialty education to better understand and accommodate the needs of cancer patients. Many of our nurses have achieved recognition as Oncology Certified Nurses, after completing 1,000+ hours of oncology experience and passing a national certification exam.

Patients who are 16 and older receive treatment at the Cancer Care Center and Inpatient Oncology. Treatment is provided in an age specific manner. Inpatients and outpatients are presented at weekly chart rounds where new and complex patients are presented at an oncology team forum.

The inpatient and outpatient oncology areas at Saint Alphonsus work as a team to ensure coordination of care between inpatient and outpatient visits.
